Purser Dooley Cockburn Smith

Company Profile

Purser Dooley Cockburn Smith (PDCS) is a law firm located in Barrie, Ontario. The firm focuses on Corporate Commercial, Residential & Commercial Real Estate, Wills & Estates, Estate Succession Planning and Commercial Litigation services. They have 36 employees in their Barrie office.

The law firm of Purser Dooley Cockburn Smith was created by the merger of two successful law firms in 2006. This merger created some logistical and technical challenges that needed to be addressed in order for the merged company to be productive and efficient., a full service IT company in Barrie, Ontario had been maintaining the network for Purser Dooley since its inception in 2002. With such a strong knowledge of the existing environment, they were called in to address the technical needs of the merger.

With two firms merging into one, there needed to be a consolidation of networks, servers, and workstations.

After reviewing the business needs of the newly merged firm, it was determined that 2 new servers were needed to address the challenges. File storage requirements of the firm necessitated a new server with sufficient capacity for the current data and room to expand. An email collaboration server was needed to increase the security, stability and storage of emails as well as calendar sharing capabilities.

The new servers accommodated the growth in number of employees, and file storage needs.

The new email collaboration platform (Microsoft Exchange Server) increased the email storage capacity from 15 gigabytes (GB) to several terabytes (TB) of space. This means that staff are able to send and receive large numbers of emails containing large legal file attachments. This is done quickly, securely and stored in one central location for backup protection.

The new solution enhanced the security of the network and reduced the amount of SPAM received saving the staff time each day.

The increased stability of the system has resulted in less downtime for maintenance and therefore increased billable hours for the legal team.

Another benefit for the merged company was being able to access the work that had done with Purser Dooley to address the government mandated requirements in the PIPEDA Act Bill C-6 regarding IT security and the protection of client data. With password control management and user access based on permission already in place, the law firm did not have to go through the work of creating and implementing the security requirements.
